Bird Watching

This beautiful area of Mid Wales has been in the national spotlight due to the BBC’s Springwatch and Autumnwatch wildlife programmes are based at the RSPB’s Ynys Hir reserve on the shores of the River Dyfi estuary. South of Machynlleth on the A487 is the village of Eglwys-fach, where you turn right and proceed for one mile to the car park to the Ynys-hir RSPB reserve

The reserve covers 550 hectares and includes a variety of habitats extending inland from mudflats and salt marsh through farmland and pools to oak woodland and hillside scrub. There are two main nature trails: 1.5 miles and 3 miles. Facilities include a small visitor centre, picnic area, bicycle track and seven hides. Bird watching starts in the car park with a host of birds at the different sections of the bird feeding station. Some of the birds to be seen are pictured below.

Before reaching Ynys Hir, situated on the right side of the road is the the Dyfi Osprey Centre. The Ospreys have been seen regularly on the Dyfi Estuary for many years during the spring and autumn migration seasons. In 2011 the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust teamed up with the BBC's Springwatch and Autumnwatch teams to feature the Dyfi ospreys. The osprey project is open from April to September, 10am to 6pm. During osprey project opening hours, there is a suggested donation scheme to help cover the costs of running the project; entry is free at other times. Facilities include visitor centre with a small shop & basic refreshments; there is a disabled toilet.  For more information on the ospreys go to www.dyfiospreyproject.com
